Sofie Aaldering (1998) has graduated in 2021 from the HKU in Utrecht in Fashion Design. She has a fascination for materials, especially their versatility. In her graduation collection Finery, she showed that materials can be used in a variety of ways. By re-evaluating and editing them, she has created a diverse collection from fashion items like dresses to textile paintings and sculptures with some basic materials. Her most used materials are sisal rope which she untangles to create volume, tulle, and glass beads and sequins on rods to create a more dimensional aspect. Sofie gives the materials freedom to unfold so that they create the shapes of her designs. She tries to get most materials second hand and from local entrepreneurs to show that even older fabrics can be turned into something beautiful. At the time of her graduation Finery consisted mostly of fashion, it now is more diverse. Over the last months she delved into the textile paintings and developed them into new ones which are now the core of Finery.
